JCPenney Commercial Description

June 2012 commercial for JCPenney. This is part of the monthly series of ads. These are such great, colorful, upbeat commercials. I hope they keep doing them. The ad is a series of quick scenes, so I’m going to list them in bullet point form:

  • A couple grilling on an orange grill in a park with green grass, a green trailer & a green car.
  • A mother and son. The son is wearing a graduation cap and gown, he stands up and is suddenly 3 feet taller than her.
  • The woman from the first scene w/ the grill drives off in the green car leaving the man behind.
  • A boy in the park uses a remote control helicopter to terrorize a man.
  • Woman and man jumping up and down with fedora hats.
  • Old man driving a go-cart.
  • Father dancing w/ his daughter at her wedding. He eventually does The Robot.
  • Finally a man swings from a rope into a green pond.

More About Artist & Song in JCPenney Commercial

The song “My Guy” was a number one hit in 1964 for singer Mary Wells. The song was written by Smokey Robinson, yes that Smokey Robinson. He was also the producer for the song. This would be the last single that Mary Wells would record for Motown. Upon the advice of her ex husband, she terminated her recording contract with Motown when she was 21 and signed a lucrative contract with 20th Century Fox for $200,000. She was hoping for movie roles and higher recording royalties. Unfortunately, she never achieved nearly the success that she saw at Motown. One of the big tragedies of this is that upon leaving Motown, in a settlement with them she forfeited all royalties from work with them, including the song “My Guy”.
Here is a live performance of the song “My Guy” by Mary Wells:

Song Lyrics Used in JCPenney Commercial

No muscle bound man
Could take my hand from my guy
No handsome face
Could ever take the place of my guy
He may not be a movie star
But when it comes to being happy we are
There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy
