More About Artist & Song

The song “Got My Love To Keep Me Warm” was written in 1937 by Irving Belin, and has been recorded no only by Billie Holiday but by Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and even Jackie Gleason. Yes, that Jackie Gleason. (Apparently there was a time that everybody had a Christmas record.)

Song In Commercial Billie Holiday

I can’t think about Billie Holiday without thinking about her tragic life, the story is downright depressing actually. She spent time in prison for drug charges, she had a nasty heroin habit. Her supplier was her husband. Besides the service of giving her drugs, her husband also beat her. She was an alcoholic and eventually died fro cirrhosis of the liver. On her death bed, the police arrested her on drug charges. And she died with $0.70 to her name because she had been swindled out of the rest. Okay, sad part is over. I promise.

Here’s the thing about Billie Holiday. In her time, jazz singers tended to be interchangeable. You could swap one crooner for another, who would sing standards. Holiday brought a unique style of her own, often playing with the rhythm and the melody. The band she was playing with had to adapt to her, not the other way around. Also, she was considered enough of a talent in her time to play for white only audiences and she even had a white band. At the time, this would’ve been scandalous for anyone else. She sold out Carnegie Hall just a few days after she got out of prison. If you want to check out her entire catalog, you can listen on Rdio.

So nice to hear Billie Holiday in the new commercial. I have appreciated and listened to her music for many years. Most people who hear her in the JCPenney commercial won’t know who she is or anything about her sad life. Thanks JCPenny, for acknowledgeing one of the truly great singers of a forgotten era. There will never be another Lady Day, but her talent should live on, just because she was like no other, before or since.

Love the commercial. The first scene with the little girl on the frozen seesaw looks like my granddaughter,as I bought her the same hat at Penney’s before christmas. The hat is so soft and looks darling on her . do you accept pictures? she is 16 months old and pretty cute also!

“she was a heavy heroin addict” – hmmm, what’s a “light heroin addict”?

You know, holidays, weekends… just kidding. Point taken. In fact, your comment made me change that sentence, because it was crummy writing on my part. It almost sounded like I was saying that she was “heavy” and a heroin addict. Thanks for helping me notice that!

A very sincere Thank You to J. C. Penny and the responsible agency for the Billie Holiday spot. When I first heard it, I ran in from another room to see and experience it. Have loved her music for years. Awesome talent with a very sad life. Totally agree with everything Christy Schroeder expressed. Very hip, and great “communications” on your part. Thank you!

I can be in the worst mood, and see Honest Abe breaking it down, and I laugh my fool head off. This has to be one of the funniest segments of a commercial I’ve seen in years!
