2012 tv commercial for JCPenney starts out with a woman seeing a sign that says “67% OFF, Yesterday Only” and she is shouting “NOOOOO!”. A woman clipping coupons shouting “Noooo!”, a woman opening her mailbox and advertisements are falling out and she is shouting “Noooo!”. A man standing in line at dawn waiting for a “4am Blowout” sale, he shouts “Nooooo!”
I like the idea behind this commercial, although, if I was forced to see it over and over again I might find it annoying. It is part of JCPenney’s new promotion where they are doing away with sales and just lowering their prices. I’m on JCPenney’s mailing list, and there is a new sale every single week. After awhile, when EVERYTHING is on sale, essentially NOTHING is on sale. Ever walk into a Kohls and see that everything is always on sale? Well, really nothing is on sale.

JC Penny needs to read these comments. This type of advertising does not encourage sales. It encourages muting the TV, changing channels (bad for networks) and alienating customers. Shame on JC Penny for foolishly thinking their customers are idiots and would laugh at this gorilla advertising.

PS: A few years back, there was a similar commercial for a mildew cleaner, I believe, that used the same tactic…people reacting to mildew, by screaming, one after another. (It was like a repeating nightmare when JCP made this commercial). Much like I did this time, I e-mailed the company, letting them know I was likely to not buy their product as a result of their awful commercial. It, too, eventually ended, but not as quickly as this one.

OMG . I can’t get to the remote fast enough to mute, block change the channel when the screaming starts. I didn’t even know it was for JCP until about the fifth time and by that time I was so angrily annoyed I just looked to see who/what is was so I could know who/what to direct my anger towards. Commericals are supposed to get you keep the product in mind, to want to buy a product to want to go to that place that has all those wonderful things we just can’t live without. etc. Just because a commerical stays with you doesn’t mean it’s a good thing. That commerical reminds me of the last time I got food poisoning after eating out. (never really got food poisoning eating out, just making a point) These advertising guru’s that wrote that commerical need to go back and have to listen to all that screaming expect this time it should be their bosses voices dubbed in. I am incensed at this commercial. The people that put this together should be fired. They have taken a masterpiece – Mozart’s Requiem – spliced two different movements together (Dies Irae and the Lacrimosa) and then screamed over the whole thing. This is by far the most annoying commercial I have ever seen and I am 65 so I have seen a few. I do not care to have my home invaded by this crazy racket. Kill the ad asap!!! My advise to the television stations running the commercial… “Please Stop!”. My advise to the advertising agency responsible for this commercial… Kill It. This commercial grates on me every time I hear it. It’s invasive, obnoxious and just plain turns me off. I agree with Kara. I like the commercial. I get the point. It is frustrating to buy something and then have it go on sale afterwards. The question is whether the JCP ‘every day low pricing’ will be successful (which is apparently the plan as of feb 1). But part of the ‘game’ and maybe fun of shopping dept. stores versus Wmart, Target and Kmart, is catching the best sales and the deep discounts after Christmas and other seasons with the 70% off, etc etc. We shall see.

After having read so many of the comments, though, I will say that I think the commercial and the concept are good. I can see why it might be annoying but it’s just not hitting me that way. The JC Penney screaming commercial is easily the most annoying and ridiculous commercial I have ever had to watch. REALLY! REALLY? JC Penny? Who in your marketing department decided that to have people screaming at the top of their lungs would be apealing? They should go into sales because they were able to convince what I would think very intelligent people, running this corporation….that this would convince us to shop at JCP.Every time I hear that commercial I scramble to grab my remote and switch channels because people screaming drive me crazy. I have read some of the other remarks and I certainly am not alone. Love your company…..but please stop that commercial!!!
I really can’t believe what has happened to JC Penny. From the screaming people, the winter commercial with a little kid hitting his crotch, to a hollaring auctioneer has absolutely hit the nooooooooooooo mark. The marketing has been off the mark all year. I am not sure what has happened but none of the commericals entice me to shop at JCPenny. In fact, it has done just the opposite. I don’t and won’t shop there anymore.
JC Penney, pull this commercial NOW! Please, for the sanity of all humanity!
I HATE this commercial also. Whoever wrote this should be shot, along with whichever exec at JCP actually BOUGHT this trash.
