About the Artist & Song in Commercial
Before writing this post, I wasn’t familiar with this band or this song at all. I did what I usually do when I hear a song I like in a commercial, I pull up the band on Rdio and listen to the song. Good grief this is a catchy song. It makes me want to go drive a Chevy Sonic around and be young and free, okay not really. But it’s a fun little anthem about forgetting your problems and getting drunk and high, no really. They talk about friends in the bathroom getting “higher than the Empire State” and then forgetting about the scar he gave his girlfriend by getting drunk and carrying each other home. I love Rock N Roll.
The song features singer Janelle Monáe. If you’ve never heard her, listen to her song in this commercial. She is an R&B/Soul singer who is on Big Boi records. In 2012, she is planning on opening for The Red Hot chili Peppers on their tour. In 2011 the band Fun opened for HER on her tour. I like it when R&B artists and rock artists perform together. I wish it happened more often.

Chevrolet Sonic Commercial Description
2012 commercial for the Chevrolet Sonic car. This commercial is mainly a montage of young people having fun and living life. Wait…. the voiceover says “from your first time….”, are they implying that you might have your first time in a Chevy Sonic? Weird… anyway, the following are the scenes from the montage of fun and youth:
- Woman in the car with her head on her boyfriend’s shoulder, she wakes up because of the sunrise. Of course they are in their red Chevy Sonic.
- Friends taking a big-wheel (is that what their called nowadays?) out of the car, and riding down a steep hill on it.
- 3 girls swaying and dancing to music in the back of the car.
- Someone driving their Chevy Sonic in a muddy field, doing donuts
- Friends having a mud fight
- Girl in a cave with a torch (presumably about to have a Goonies adventure?)
- Catching fireflies at night

Great choice! a song about being falling down drunk and looking for a way home…. to the Chevy… we can make make it home. Good song, but you would think a car company would think twice about the storyline of the song.
Ha! Good point. I’d thought about the storyline for that car was odd for a commercial, but I didn’t even think about the fact that it’s even more odd for a CAR commercial.
You’re both wrong. Listen to the beginning. It’s about a guy who has lost his significant other because he hurt them, and is trying to make amends by being there for them when they need someone.
